ADAMTS13 Activity

Use
The ADAMTS13 Activity test assists in diagnosing acquired (idiopathic) or inherited thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), conditions characterized by the deficiency of the von Willebrand factor cleaving protease, known as ADAMTS13. Levels of this enzyme that fall below 10 percent may indicate either Upshaw-Schulman Syndrome or acquired TTP. Mild to moderate deficiencies can be seen in a variety of medical conditions, and recent plasma exchange therapy might elevate the observed ADAMTS13 activity.
Special Instructions
This test has been developed and its performance characteristics have been determined by ARUP Laboratories. Note that this test has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and intended for clinical purposes. It's important to use a sodium citrate tube for specimen collection as specified in the patient preparation guidelines to avoid unacceptable conditions such as using serum or EDTA plasma.
Limitations
This chromogenic assay for ADAMTS13 Activity does not provide FDA clearance or approval and is therefore categorized as a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT). It is critical to separate specimens if multiple tests are ordered simultaneously to maintain specimen integrity, especially given the sensitivity of this test to the appropriate plasma type. Furthermore, the stability constraints (ambient: 2 hours, frozen: 2 weeks) must be strictly adhered to avoid degradation of the sample that might lead to incorrect results.
