Aldolase, Serum
Also known as: ALDOLASE
Use
The Aldolase, Serum test is used to evaluate muscle damage and certain myopathies. It provides a measure of aldolase enzyme levels, which are elevated in conditions affecting muscle tissue such as muscular dystrophy and other inflammatory myopathies. This test has been largely replaced by more specific markers like CK, AST, and ALT for muscle or liver damage diagnosis.
Special Instructions
This test should not be used as a stand-alone test due to its non-specific nature. It has been largely replaced by other enzyme tests for more accurate assessment of muscle or liver damage. Ensure to use a serum separator tube for proper specimen collection and processing.
Limitations
The test is non-specific and may not accurately reflect muscle or liver damage without corroborative evidence from more specific tests. Elevated aldolase levels can also be seen in other conditions not related to muscle damage, leading to potential misinterpretation.
