Allergen, Drugs, Penicillin V (minor)
Also known as: PENICIL V
Use
This test is used to measure specific IgE antibodies to minor allergenic determinants of Penicillin V. These antibodies are indicative of sensitivity to this drug, which is important in the assessment of potential allergic reactions. Identification of drug allergies is crucial for managing adverse effects, avoiding allergenic drugs, and ensuring alternative medication is provided.
Special Instructions
Blood samples for testing should be collected no sooner than 2-3 weeks and no later than 6 months after penicillin exposure, due to the rise and fall of circulating specific IgE antibodies. Multiple patient encounters should be avoided.
Limitations
Results ranging from 0.10 to 0.34 kU/L should be interpreted cautiously and typically require specialist insight as the clinical relevance is undetermined. The test results may not directly correlate with clinical responses or skin test results when challenged with the specific allergen. Therefore, it's important to correlate laboratory results with clinical history and in vivo reactivity for accurate evaluation. A negative result may not rule out clinical allergy or even anaphylaxis.
