Allergens, Food, Southwest Basic Profile
Also known as: SWFOOD
Use
The Allergens, Food, Southwest Basic Profile test is used to evaluate an individual's hypersensitivity to certain food allergens prevalent in the Southwestern region of the United States. This test measures the presence of allergen-specific IgE antibodies in the patient's serum, helping clinicians assess the likelihood of IgE-mediated allergic reactions to foods such as chicken, fish, eggs, milk, nuts, soy, and wheat. Results aid in diagnosing potential food allergies, which can guide dietary modifications and allergy management for patients with a history of allergic reactions or related symptoms.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided to prevent variability in results. Serum separator tubes should be used for specimen collection, and the transfer of serum into an ARUP Standard Transport Tube should occur as soon as possible, ideally within two hours of collection, to maintain specimen integrity.
Limitations
The concentrations of allergen-specific IgE antibodies measured may not correlate with the degree of clinical response observed during an allergic reaction or with the results from skin testing. Allergen results within the range of 0.10-0.34 kU/L are primarily for specialist use, and their clinical relevance is not clearly determined. A negative test result does not definitively rule out the possibility of clinical allergy or potential anaphylaxis. It is crucial to correlate laboratory results with the patient’s clinical history and reactivity to allergens in vivo.
