Alpha-2-Macroglobulin
Also known as: A2M
Use
Alpha-2-Macroglobulin may be used as a marker of membrane permeability in urine or as an indirect marker for liver fibrosis. This protein is involved in inhibiting protease enzymes and modulating immune responses. Elevations in its levels can indicate several pathological conditions, including liver fibrosis, nephrotic syndrome, and others associated with increased vascular permeability and inflammation.
Special Instructions
This test is New York state approved, which facilitates its use in clinical settings within the state. Samples should be handled carefully to avoid hemolysis, which can result in sample rejection.
Limitations
The test must be conducted on serum samples, as CSF and hemolyzed specimens are unacceptable. If the serum is not separated from cells within the specified time frame, stability can be compromised. The results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and other laboratory tests, as many factors can influence protein levels.
