Autoimmune Epilepsy Panel, Serum
Also known as: AIEPS
Use
The Autoimmune Epilepsy Panel, Serum is utilized to evaluate new acute-to subacute-onset epilepsy and incomplete seizure control within less than 2 years. This panel is particularly recommended for patients displaying new-onset movement disorders or if there are subacute-onset neurologic symptoms without seizures. It allows for the detection of specific antibodies that are associated with autoimmune neurologic diseases, aiding in the differential diagnosis and management of autoimmune-mediated epilepsy and related neurological disorders.
Special Instructions
For patients younger than 18 years, the Autoimmune Pediatric CNS Disorders, Serum panel should be considered. Testing both serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is recommended to enhance diagnostic yield, as indicated for Autoimmune Epilepsy Panel, CSF (3006205). If the NMDA receptor antibody IgG is positive, a titer will be performed with additional charges. Similarly, if other antibody screens are positive, further titer and immunoblot testing may ensue, incurring additional costs.
Limitations
This test does not provide a definitive diagnostic result on its own and should be interpreted in conjunction with the patient's clinical history and other laboratory findings. False-negative results may occur, and negative results do not preclude the presence of autoimmune neurological conditions. Also, the presence of these antibodies can be associated with various tumor types, detailed evaluation for the underlying neoplasm is recommended in such cases.
