Basic Metabolic Panel
Also known as: BMP
Use
The Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) is a commonly ordered panel of tests that provides important information on the body's fluid and electrolyte balance, kidney function, and glucose levels. It is frequently utilized in routine health exams, patient monitoring for hospital or outpatient procedures, and the monitoring of specific conditions like hypertension and kidney disease.
Special Instructions
Collect a plasma or serum separator tube; for serum, allow the tube to clot completely at room temperature. The sample should be separated from cells as soon as possible, within 30 minutes of collection. Transfer 1 mL of serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. Use a minimum of 0.3 mL if necessary.
Limitations
The Basic Metabolic Panel may have limitations in cases where the patient is undergoing treatment that could affect metabolic status, such as IV fluid therapy, certain medications, or other conditions affecting fluid balance and organ function. Results must be interpreted in context with clinical evaluation and other tests. Sample integrity can impact results; specimens collected in EDTA, citrate, or oxalate tubes are unacceptable.
