Bile Acids, Fractionated and Total by LC-MS/MS
Also known as: BILE ACIDS
Use
This test aids in the evaluation of liver function and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. It is also used to monitor patients on bile acid therapy. The test is not useful for the diagnosis of inborn errors of bile acid metabolism. The reference intervals were established in fasting individuals to improve accuracy.
Special Instructions
Fasting for a minimum of eight hours prior to specimen collection is recommended. After clot formation, centrifuge specimen and pour off serum into a transport tube.
Limitations
The test is not approved for diagnosing inborn errors of bile acid metabolism. Mild elevation of bile acids in non-fasting individuals can occur, which may affect result interpretation. For accurate interpretations, specimen fasting is recommended.
