BK Virus by Quantitative NAAT, Urine
Also known as: BKQ U
Use
The BK Virus by Quantitative NAAT, Urine test is used to detect and quantify the presence of BK virus in urine. It is particularly significant for monitoring viral load in transplant patients, where BK virus infections can lead to renal allograft dysfunction. The quantitative PCR method allows for precise measurement of viral load, which is critical for clinical decision-making and patient management.
Special Instructions
Samples should be collected in cobas(R) PCR urine sample tubes, and ensuring the liquid level is between the black fill lines is critical for test validity. Specimens should be transported refrigerated, as this particular sample type remains stable for 90 days under ambient or refrigerated conditions, but is unstable when frozen.
Limitations
The test has a quantitative range of 2.30-8.00 log IU/mL, meaning that BK virus levels above or below this range may not be accurately quantified. An interpretation of 'Not Detected' might not conclusively rule out the presence of BK virus, especially if the sample contains inhibitors or the viral DNA concentration is below the detectable level. Additionally, though international standardization has improved comparability across laboratories, variations due to commutability of the standard might still occur.
