Blastomyces dermatitidis Identification
Also known as: MC BP
Use
This test is used to identify Blastomyces dermatitidis in its yeast or mold form from a pure isolate. The identification is crucial for diagnosing infections caused by this organism, which can lead to conditions such as blastomycosis, a fungal infection that can affect the lungs and other organs in the body. Accurate identification is essential for guiding appropriate antifungal treatment and patient management.
Special Instructions
Ensure to transport the specimen in a sealed container with pure culture on non-blood containing fungal medium. Each specimen should be placed in an individually sealed bag to avoid contamination. Note that results may be delayed if the growth of the organism is inadequate.
Limitations
The test may not perform adequately if the culture contains mixed or non-viable organisms, or if the specimen is on an agar plate. These conditions are considered unacceptable for the test and can lead to erroneous or delayed results. Additionally, the test's performance characteristics have been determined by ARUP Laboratories but have not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
