Carnitine, Free and Total, Urine
Also known as: CARN URINE
Use
The Carnitine, Free and Total, Urine test is useful in the diagnosis of primary carnitine deficiency, also known as carnitine uptake defect. It is used in conjunction with free and total plasma carnitine tests to provide a comprehensive evaluation. This test helps in assessing the metabolic function related to carnitine levels and aids in diagnosing deficiencies or abnormalities in carnitine metabolism.
Special Instructions
Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. The concentration of esterified carnitine is derived from a mathematical calculation using free and total carnitine. The test results are provided with age-specific reference intervals for interpretation.
Limitations
This test is a laboratory developed test and has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. It is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory, intended for clinical purposes. The performance characteristics of the test were determined by ARUP Laboratories. The results should be interpreted with caution in the context of the overall clinical picture.
