Chymotrypsin, Fecal
Also known as: CHYMOTRYP
Use
The Chymotrypsin, Fecal test is used to assess pancreatic function by measuring the level of chymotrypsin enzyme in stool. It is a key test in evaluating patients for chronic pancreatitis and other conditions related to the exocrine pancreatic function. Low levels of chymotrypsin in feces may indicate pancreatic insufficiency, which can be seen in conditions like chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, and pancreatic cancer.

Limitations
This test is performed by an external laboratory, specifically Quest Diagnostics. Despite having been validated according to CLIA regulations for clinical purposes, it has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. This poses a limitation in the regulatory acceptance of the results. The stability of the specimen is also a limiting factor; it remains stable for 2 weeks when refrigerated and for 1 month when frozen, but it is unsuitable for testing if kept at ambient temperature.
