Coccidioides immitis Identification
Also known as: MC CP
Use
This test is used to identify Coccidioides immitis, which is a fungal pathogen, in either its yeast or mold form, from a pure isolate. Coccidioides immitis is known to cause the disease coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever). The identification of this organism is clinically significant as it can help guide appropriate antifungal treatment and inform public health interventions to control the spread of infection.
Special Instructions
Transport specimens in sealed containers, ensuring the culture remains viable, using non-blood containing fungal medium. Each specimen must be placed in an individually sealed bag and shipped according to Infectious Substance, Category A, shipping guidelines.
Limitations
The test may be delayed if the growth of the organism is insufficient, which may lead to longer turnaround times. The presence of mixed or non-viable organisms, or the use of agar plates as specimens, is unacceptable for this test.
