Comprehensive Heart Biopsy Workup
Also known as: HRT REQ
Use
The Comprehensive Heart Biopsy Workup is critical in evaluating heart transplant patients to assess the presence of acute cellular rejection and antibody-mediated rejection. This test is also crucial for diagnosing other pathological changes in heart transplant or native heart biopsy specimens. By providing detailed histopathological information, this test aids clinicians in making informed decisions regarding patient management and treatment plans.
Special Instructions
The test utilizes a Renal/Heart Biopsy Collection Kit (ARUP supply #40460) for specimen collection. It requires special fixatives, including formalin and Zeus fixative, provided with the kit. Specimen collection instructions are crucial to prevent suboptimal biopsy fixation and avoid delays in diagnosis. Additionally, all vials must be appropriately labeled with the patient's full name and unique identifier to ensure accuracy. Avoid drying of specimens by ensuring they are completely submerged in the fixative.
Limitations
The exact limitations of the Comprehensive Heart Biopsy Workup are not detailed; however, it requires representative tissue type for accurate results. The use of non-representative tissue can lead to rejection and diagnostic delays. The stability of specimens is crucial, with ambient and refrigerated conditions acceptable for up to 48 hours, while frozen conditions are not acceptable. Testing is subject to the discretion of the ARUP pathologist, and charges may vary based on individual patient requirements.
