Consultation, Neuropathology
Also known as: NP CONSULT
Use
The Consultation, Neuropathology test is a specialized assessment performed to diagnose and interpret neuropathological conditions based on tissue evaluation. It involves in-depth microscopic examination of surgical pathology material such as tissue biopsies and provides insights necessary for treatment planning and prognosis. This service leverages expert pathologist interpretation to provide definitive diagnoses on complex cases that require detailed analysis, ensuring accurate and timely patient care.
Special Instructions
The test requires submission of either paraffin-embedded tissue samples or stained slides, accompanied by a surgical pathology report. It is important to use the ARUP consultation transport kit when sending the samples. Electronic requests are preferred, but physical forms can be used with a valid ARUP client number if electronic ordering is not available. Ancillary testing may be ordered at the discretion of the reviewing pathologist and may incur additional charges. Appropriate stains and other tests requested by the physician may not be performed if deemed unnecessary.
Limitations
This test is limited to the evaluation of available tissue specimens. The results are dependent on the quality and representativeness of the submitted materials. Wet tissues and non-representative specimens are not acceptable. The test may not cover all possible diagnoses if the tissue is insufficient or degraded, and frozen specimens are unacceptable. Additional ancillary tests may be required, but the decisions on these are made by ARUP pathologists, potentially limiting outside physician-requested evaluations.
