Drug Detection Panel, Meconium, Qualitative
Also known as: MEC PANEL
Use
This test is used to detect and document fetal drug exposure during approximately the last trimester of a full-term pregnancy. It aids in identifying maternal drug use by examining the drug deposition in meconium. The test results may provide insights into potential maternal drug use patterns, though the exact frequency of drug usage by the mother cannot be determined. The detection in meconium helps in understanding drug exposure conditions that the fetus might have experienced during gestation. However, it's important to note that this analysis is intended for clinical purposes only and not valid for forensic use.
Special Instructions
For panel testing that includes THC metabolite, refer to Drug Detection Panel and THC Metabolite, Meconium, Qualitative (3006373). It is crucial to collect all available meconium excreted until the stool changes color from blackish to yellow-green. Ensure that the specimen is collected in a suitable container such as a urine collection cup or Security Kit for Meconium/Umbilical Drug Detection available through ARUP supply.
Limitations
The pattern and frequency of drug(s) used by the mother cannot be determined by this test. A negative result does not exclude the possibility of drug use during pregnancy. The efficiency of detection is influenced by various factors including drug stability, unique characteristics of drug deposition in meconium, and the analytical method used. Drugs administered during labor and delivery may be detected, but presence in meconium does not imply impairment or affect outcomes for the infant.
