Electron Microscopy Technical Only Request
Also known as: EMTO REQ
Use
Electron microscopy is a powerful diagnostic tool used in pathology laboratories to provide high-resolution imaging of biological specimens at the ultrastructural level. This test is beneficial for evaluating specimens that require a detailed analysis of cellular structures, such as renal biopsies, cilia in respiratory epithelium, or neuromuscular samples. The electron microscopy service provides clinicians with visual information that may aid in diagnosing conditions that are difficult to assess with light microscopy alone.
Special Instructions
Prior to specimen collection, it is required to contact ARUP's Electron Microscopy Laboratory at [email protected] for preauthorization. This ensures the laboratory is prepared to process and handle the specimen appropriately upon arrival.
Limitations
This test is performed as a technical service only, and no interpretation is provided by the pathologists at ARUP Laboratories. Without pathology interpretation, specific diagnoses cannot be established solely based on electron microscopy imaging. Diagnostic conclusions should be integrated with clinical findings and other laboratory data for comprehensive patient assessment.
