FYA Antigen Typing - Patient
Also known as: FYA AG
Use
This test determines whether the Fy(a) antigen is expressed on the patient's red blood cells. It is useful for understanding the patient's blood group antigen profile particularly in the context of blood transfusions and hemolytic disease of the newborn. The test can also be part of the workup for patients who require antigen-negative blood products. Since the Fy(a) antigen may not be expressed in certain populations, this test aids in identifying individuals who are Duffy-null, which can be relevant in malaria resistance.
Special Instructions
The test is specifically for determining the Fy(a) antigen status. For a comprehensive analysis of the patient's Duffy antigen status, ordering the FYB Antigen Typing (2007725) in conjunction with this test is recommended.
Limitations
The test does not provide information regarding the presence of any other antigens or structural variations of the Fy(a) antigen beyond its presence or absence. Factors such as recent transfusions or technical errors could potentially contribute to inaccurate results. Antigen typing may not detect weakly expressed antigens or those masked by other factors. This test is not suitable for determining if a person is a carrier of the FY1 gene variant.
