Galectin-3, Serum
Also known as: GALECTIN
Use
The Galectin-3, Serum test is used for prognostication in heart failure. It complements the prognostic value of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). An elevated concentration of galectin-3 is associated with increased cardiovascular risk and adverse outcomes in patients with heart failure. It assists in the medical management of such patients, although decisions should rely primarily on clinical findings.
Special Instructions
The test has been approved by the New York State Department of Health, indicating adherence to regulatory standards. It is crucial to note that plasma specimens or visibly hemolyzed specimens are unacceptable for this test, and repeated freeze/thaw cycles should be avoided to ensure accuracy.
Limitations
The interpretation of the Galectin-3, Serum test results should not be the sole basis for managing heart failure. Instead, it should complement clinical findings. The method used is Quantitative Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), and results are subject to the limitations inherent in this methodology. Factors such as sample handling, collection time, and patient's physiological conditions may influence the results.
