Gastrin, 1 Minute
Also known as: GAST 1
Use
The Gastrin, 1 Minute test is used to measure the level of gastrin in the blood. Gastrin is a hormone that stimulates the production of gastric acid in the stomach, which is important for digestion. This test is especially useful in the diagnosis of conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where excessive levels of gastrin are produced. It is also helpful in evaluating patients with recurrent peptic ulcers and differentiating between different types of hypergastrinemia.
Special Instructions
Patients should fast for 12 hours before the test to ensure accurate results. Serum should be collected in a serum separator tube (SST) and then transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube for submission. Ensure proper storage and transportation conditions to maintain specimen integrity.
Limitations
This test is limited by factors such as improper specimen handling, collection from non-fasting patients, and interference from lipemic or hemolyzed samples which may affect the accuracy of the results. It is not suitable for diagnosing conditions unrelated to gastrin excess or evaluating gastrointestinal function in non-symptomatic conditions. Plasma, tissue, or urine samples are not acceptable and should not be used to perform the test.
