Gastrin, 10 Minute
Also known as: GAST 10
Use
The Gastrin, 10 Minute test is used to measure gastrin levels in the blood. Elevated gastrin levels can be indicative of conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which is characterized by excessive gastric acid production leading to peptic ulcers. The test can help in the diagnosis of gastrin-producing tumors called gastrinomas, and in monitoring levels in patients with known conditions related to gastrin excess.
Special Instructions
A 12-hour fasting period is recommended before specimen collection to ensure accurate gastrin level measurement and avoid any postprandial elevations that could affect the results.
Limitations
The test is not suitable for patients who have not adhered to the 12-hour fasting requirement as postprandial increases in gastrin could lead to false elevations. Additionally, hemolyzed or lipemic serum specimens may interfere with the assay, and plasma, tissue, or urine samples are unacceptable for this test.
