Gastrin, 30 Minute
Also known as: GAST 30
Use
The Gastrin, 30 Minute test is used to measure the level of gastrin in the blood. Gastrin is a hormone produced by G-cells in the stomach lining that stimulates the production of gastric acid, which is essential for digestion. This test is particularly relevant for diagnosing conditions related to abnormal gastrin levels such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where tumors lead to excessive gastrin production. Additionally, it may be used to help evaluate patients with recurrent peptic ulcer disease or those with suspected gastrinoma.
Special Instructions
Patients should fast for 12 hours prior to the collection of the specimen to ensure accurate results. Serum is collected in a serum separator tube, and after separation from cells, serum should be transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. Minimum sample volume is 0.5 mL, though 1 mL is recommended.
Limitations
The test is not suitable for plasma, tissue, or urine samples, and will not be performed on grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens. Ambient stability for serum is limited to 8 hours; however, it can be refrigerated for up to a week or frozen for up to a month. Variability in patient preparation, such as non-fasting, could affect the results, leading to inaccurate assessments.
