Gastrin, Baseline
Also known as: GAST BASE
Use
Gastrin measurement is used in the diagnosis and management of conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and pernicious anemia. Elevated levels may indicate the presence of gastrin-producing tumors or other gastrointestinal conditions that cause overproduction of the hormone. Gastrin is a key regulator of stomach acidity and is measured as part of investigations into symptoms of gastric acid hypersecretion, such as peptic ulcers.
Special Instructions
Patients are recommended to fast for 12 hours prior to serum collection to ensure accurate measurement of gastrin levels.
Limitations
The test is limited in differentiating between various causes of increased gastrin levels. Factors such as intake of certain medications, recent gastric surgery, or presence of other medical conditions may potentially affect gastrin levels. Grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens can interfere with test results and are thus unacceptable.
