Glucose, Body Fluid
Also known as: GLU-FL
Use
The Glucose, Body Fluid test is used to measure the glucose concentration in body fluids such as pericardial, peritoneal/ascites, pleural, and synovial fluid. Measuring glucose levels in body fluids helps in the diagnostic evaluation of metabolic statuses, disorders, or conditions that may impact fluid glucose levels. Such measurements can aid in identifying infections, inflammation, or metabolic end products in these specific body fluids that may not be detected in systemic blood tests.
Special Instructions
The specimen source must be provided for this test. The test is suitable for pericardial, peritoneal/ascites, pleural, or synovial fluid only. Avoid submitting other types of fluids or viscous specimens that cannot be aspirated by the instrument. Compliance testing as a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT) implies availability but not FDA clearance for this diagnostic assay.
Limitations
The test is not cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is important to only use the specified types of body fluid specimens: pericardial, peritoneal/ascites, pleural, or synovial. Centrifuge specimens to remove cellular material before transport. Misidentification or inappropriate handling of these specimens may affect result accuracy. This test cannot be performed on cerebrospinal fluid; for CSF glucose levels, refer to ARUP test code 3016614. Results from glucose tests in other body fluids may not readily correlate with systemic glucose measures.
