Hexagonal Phospholipid Neutralization
Also known as: HEX PHOS
Use
The Hexagonal Phospholipid Neutralization test is used to detect lupus anticoagulant antibodies, which are a heterogeneous group of antibodies associated with increased risk of thrombosis. The test is part of the thrombophilia workup and is important for diagnosing antiphospholipid syndrome. As lupus anticoagulant antibodies demonstrate variable sensitivity and no single test can identify all, this test is often used in conjunction with other assays to ensure reliable detection. The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis recommends using two or more tests for lupus anticoagulant screening.
Special Instructions
The preferred test for initial screening is the Lupus Anticoagulant Reflex Panel (3017009). It is advised to interpret the results of this test in the context of clinical presentation. Testing on two or more occasions at least 12 weeks apart is recommended to confirm persistently positive results.
Limitations
False positive results may occur in the presence of high concentrations of anticoagulant medications or specific factor inhibitors. The Hexagonal Phospholipid Neutralization test has limitations due to the variability of lupus anticoagulant antibodies, meaning that it may not detect all forms of these antibodies. Therefore, additional tests are recommended for a comprehensive assessment.
