Insulin, Random
Also known as: INSULIN R
Use
This test aids in the detection of insulinoma, a condition characterized by an excessive insulin production from the pancreas. It is not used for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus but may be helpful in evaluating patients with symptoms suggestive of an insulinoma.
Special Instructions
Patient preparation involves collection in a serum separator tube. Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature and separate serum from cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection.
Limitations
This test exhibits cross-reactivity with some insulin analogs. Reactivity with insulin aspart, insulin glargine, and insulin lispro is nearly equimolar, while insulin detemir shows approximately 50% cross-reactivity. Reactivity with insulin glulisine is negligible, less than 3%. The test does not establish a reference interval for fasting insulin values.
