Interleukin 6, Serum
Also known as: IL6 DO
Use
This test is primarily used for research and to support attempts to understand the pathogenesis of various disorders associated with immune, infectious, allergic, or inflammatory responses. Interleukin 6 is a cytokine, and its levels can indicate the presence and progression of these conditions. The measurement of IL-6 levels can provide insights into pathological processes and can be used for research purposes or to understand the pathophysiology of specific diseases.
Special Instructions
Cytokine levels may demonstrate diurnal variation, so it is recommended to determine cytokine levels at the same time of day for longitudinal comparison. The test is a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT) performed in a CLIA certified laboratory.
Limitations
This test has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Refrigerated specimens and contaminated or heat-inactivated specimens are unacceptable. Results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and may be subject to variability based on time of day due to diurnal variation.
