Lead, Urine
Also known as: LEAD U
Use
This test is useful in the assessment of chronic lead exposure and monitoring chelation therapy. It helps in evaluating potential lead poisoning by quantifying the amount of lead excreted in urine over a specified time period. The test can be essential for individuals with occupational exposure to lead, or in those undergoing treatment to remove excess lead from the body.
Special Instructions
The test requires careful specimen collection to avoid contamination and ensure accurate results. Patients should discontinue certain supplements and medications upon physician advice to prevent interference. Collection should avoid periods soon after contrast media exposure.
Limitations
Urine samples collected soon after the administration of iodinated or gadolinium-based contrast media are not acceptable due to potential interference. The test may return falsely elevated results if collection containers are not certified to be trace element-free. Elevated results should be confirmed with a second specimen if contamination is suspected. Other factors such as improper collection method and contamination from skin or collection devices can affect results.
