Lipoprotein (a)
Also known as: LIPO A
Use
This test is not recommended for cardiovascular risk assessment in asymptomatic adults but may aid in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk stratification in specific populations. Lipoprotein (a) levels can provide additional information alongside traditional lipid measures to evaluate the risk for heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions.
Special Instructions
The test is New York state approved. Collect serum or plasma using Serum Separator Tube (SST), Plasma Separator Tube (PST), or Green (Lithium Heparin), Lavender (EDTA), or Pink (K2EDTA) tubes. Allow specimen to clot completely and separate from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection.
Limitations
Unacceptable conditions for the specimen include body fluids. The test stability after separation from cells is limited to 8 hours at ambient temperature, 14 days refrigerated, and 1 month frozen. Quantitative immunoturbidimetric methodology is used for determination, which may have certain specificity and sensitivity limitations.
