Magnesium, Fecal
Also known as: FECMG
Use
The Magnesium, Fecal test is used to evaluate magnesium levels in stool, which can help diagnose conditions like malabsorption syndromes or excessive magnesium intake. It aids in clinical decision-making by providing insight into the patient's gastrointestinal absorption and excretion of magnesium.
Special Instructions
For accurate results, the specimen should be collected as a 24-hour or random stool sample. It's crucial to mix the stool specimen well and transfer at least 5 g to an unpreserved stool transport vial. Do not add saline or water to the specimen, and be sure to indicate the total collection time and weight. All specimens should be refrigerated immediately after collection to maintain stability.
Limitations
This test is specifically designed for clinical purposes and should be interpreted in the context of other clinical and laboratory findings. It was developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories but has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Incorrect specimen handling could compromise test results. Formed or viscous stools are not accepted as they may interfere with the accuracy of the test.
