Melatonin Quantitative, Serum or Plasma
Also known as: MELATON SP
Use
This test is primarily used in research studies to quantitatively measure the level of melatonin in serum or plasma. It provides important insights into endogenous melatonin concentrations, which vary based on the time of day and the patient's age. The test can be useful in understanding the pharmacokinetics of melatonin after oral administration and monitoring any potential overdosing scenarios, given melatonin's role in sleep regulation.
Special Instructions
The test is not performed at ARUP Laboratories, which requires separate specimen submissions if multiple tests are ordered. Specimens should be separated from cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection to ensure accuracy.
Limitations
This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by NMS Labs. It has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Therefore, its results should be used with caution and primarily intended for research use. Clinical decisions based on the test results should be made considering its research status and lack of FDA clearance.
