Mumps Virus by PCR
Also known as: MPSPCR
Use
The Mumps Virus by PCR test is used to detect the presence of the mumps virus in buccal swab specimens. It provides a qualitative result indicating whether the virus is detected or not detected. This test is beneficial for diagnosing mumps infection, particularly in clinical settings where precise identification of the virus is necessary for patient management.
Special Instructions
Patients should avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum for 30 minutes before collecting the oral sample. The collection involves obtaining a buccal swab, which should be transferred to viral transport media supplied by ARUP. Sample collection must follow these specific instructions to ensure accurate results.
Limitations
The test is a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT) performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and, as such, it has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. A 'Not Detected' result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or assay-specific nucleic acid in concentrations below the level of detection by the assay. It is important to consider these factors when interpreting test results.
