Mycoplasma pneumoniae Antibody, IgG
Also known as: MYCO-G
Use
The Mycoplasma pneumoniae Antibody, IgG test measures the level of IgG antibodies to Mycoplasma pneumoniae in the blood. Over 50% of healthy adults have a relatively high background of specific M. pneumoniae IgG antibodies in their sera, possibly due to past infections. This test is significant for confirming reinfection by M. pneumoniae when two serum samples taken 1 to 3 weeks apart show significant changes in IgG levels.
Special Instructions
Serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. Convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days of the acute specimen. Specimens should be clearly marked as either 'acute' or 'convalescent.'
Limitations
Results can be influenced by bacterially contaminated, heat-inactivated, hemolyzed, icteric, lipemic, or turbid specimens. Background levels of antibodies in healthy adults could affect test interpretation. Parallel testing and proper marking of specimens as 'acute' or 'convalescent' are important for accurate diagnosis.
