Orotic Acid, Urine
Also known as: OROTICACID
Use
The Orotic Acid, Urine test is used in the evaluation of patients with suspected urea cycle disorders. It aids in diagnosing conditions like ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency and other related disorders. This test measures the level of orotic acid in urine, which can assist in understanding metabolic issues related to the urea cycle and orotic aciduria.
Special Instructions
For accurate evaluation, it is recommended to concurrently order Amino Acids Quantitative by LC-MS/MS in both plasma and urine, along with Organic Acids, Urine testing. Keep urine specimen refrigerated until it is frozen. Transfer the urine to an ARUP standard transport tube and freeze immediately after collection. Avoid samples containing preservatives.
Limitations
The Orotic Acid, Urine test does not cover all possible urea cycle disorders or metabolic conditions. Elevated levels of orotic acid might not be exclusive to urea cycle disorders and could be influenced by various dietary or health factors. Ambient storage is unacceptable, and the specimen must be handled properly to avoid degradation. Accuracy depends on the specimen being well preserved and promptly processed.
