Pancreatic Elastase, Fecal by Immunoassay
Also known as: ELASTASE
Use
The Pancreatic Elastase, Fecal by Immunoassay test is used to diagnose exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, a condition where the pancreas does not produce enough enzymes for digestion. It is particularly useful for evaluating patients with symptoms indicative of cystic fibrosis or chronic pancreatitis. By measuring the concentration of pancreatic elastase in stool, the test assesses pancreatic function and helps guide the management of digestive disorders.
Special Instructions
Enzyme substitution therapy does not influence the determination of Pancreatic Elastase-1 levels. Retesting on formed stool is recommended if the initial result is from watery diarrhea, as the dilution could affect results.
Limitations
Reference intervals do not apply to infants less than one month old. Stool samples in media or preservatives and swabs are not acceptable, and samples should be stored refrigerated. The presence of watery stool can lead to dilution and potentially inaccurate results, necessitating retesting with formed stool.
