Prolactin
Also known as: PROLAC
Use
This test screens for anterior pituitary tumors by measuring serum or plasma prolactin levels. Elevated prolactin may indicate conditions such as pituitary adenomas, hypothyroidism or other disorders affecting prolactin regulation. The test is especially used in the context of assessing pituitary disorders and evaluating prolactinoma, particularly in patients demonstrating symptoms such as galactorrhea or amenorrhea.
Special Instructions
Pregnancy, lactation, and the use of oral contraceptives can artificially increase prolactin concentrations. Therefore, it is important to consider patient conditions that might affect prolactin levels during interpretation of test results.
Limitations
This test should not be used to test prolactin levels in patients with suspected prolactinoma during pregnancy as levels will be elevated due to pregnancy itself. Additionally, while prolactin levels can reflect pituitary disorders, other conditions can also cause altered levels. Outside influences like stress and time of day may also affect test results.
