Reducing Substances - Fecal
Also known as: FEC RED
Use
The Reducing Substances - Fecal test is utilized to detect the presence of reducing substances in stool, which can suggest carbohydrate malabsorption conditions. This test plays a role in diagnosing conditions such as lactose intolerance or other sugar malabsorption issues. It is particularly relevant for pediatric patients where these conditions are more prevalent and can lead to symptoms including diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain.
Special Instructions
The specimen required for this test is stool, which should be transferred to an unpreserved stool transport vial (ARUP Supply #40910). The specimen must be frozen for transport. Diapers, stool containing barium, and specimens in media or preservatives are not acceptable. The test is performed daily from Sunday to Saturday.
Limitations
This test has certain limitations, such as the inability to specify which reducing substances are present. Therefore, it may not differentiate between different types of disaccharides or other reducing agents. Additionally, false positives may occur due to the presence of interfering substances.
