Respiratory Viruses DFA
Also known as: RSPFA
Use
The Respiratory Viruses DFA test is designed for the detection of various respiratory viruses, including Human Metapneumovirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza Types 1, 2, 3, Influenza A, and B. It aids in the diagnosis of infections caused by these viruses. However, due to moderate sensitivity compared to culture or RT-PCR, it is recommended to use the test in conjunction with viral culture or RT-PCR for a more comprehensive analysis.
Special Instructions
This test should not be ordered as a stand-alone test because of its moderate sensitivity for Influenza viruses A and B compared to culture or RT-PCR. Preferred tests are Respiratory Viruses DFA with Reflex to Viral Culture or Respiratory Virus DFA with Reflex to Respiratory Virus Mini Panel by RT-PCR.
Limitations
The sensitivity of the DFA testing for detecting RSV is greater than 95% and it does not require culture backup. However, for other viruses like Influenza virus A and B, the sensitivity is only moderate, potentially leading to false negatives. Ambient specimen stability is limited to 2 hours, refrigerated to 72 hours, and frozen specimens are unacceptable.
