Respiratory Viruses Rapid Culture
Also known as: V RESPC
Use
This test detects common respiratory viruses and offers improved turnaround time over the standard respiratory viral culture. It is especially useful for rapid diagnosis of respiratory viral infections, enabling timely management and treatment of patients. The viruses that can be detected by this culture include adenovirus, influenza A and B, parainfluenza types 1, 2, 3, and RSV. This test does not routinely detect other viruses such as HSV, CMV, and human metapneumovirus.
Special Instructions
Specimen source is preferred during submission. Use ARUP Supply #12884 for viral transport media.
Limitations
This test has decreased sensitivity for the detection of adenovirus. It is not suitable for the routine detection of viruses such as HSV, CMV, and human metapneumovirus. The culture method may miss viruses present in low quantities or in latent forms, and its sensitivity can be affected by the quality and freshness of the specimen.
