S-100B Protein, Serum
Also known as: S 100B
Use
The S-100B Protein, Serum test is useful as a biomarker for various central nervous system (CNS) pathologies and serves as a tumor marker for malignant melanoma. It's particularly beneficial in clinical settings for monitoring disease progression and prognosis in melanoma patients.
Special Instructions
This test requires a serum specimen collected in a separator or plain red tube. It's crucial to allow the serum specimen to clot at room temperature and separate the serum from cells as soon as possible, or within 2 hours of collection. For transport, transfer 2 mL of serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. The specimen must be stored and transported frozen.
Limitations
The assay used in this test is the CanAg S100 Enzyme Immunoassay, and it is important to note that results obtained with different assay methods or kits are not interchangeable. Furthermore, results cannot be interpreted as absolute evidence of malignant disease presence or absence. The laboratory has developed the test and determined its performance characteristics, but it has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
