Secretin
Also known as: SECRETIN
Use
The Secretin test is used to diagnose pancreatic disorders by measuring the response of the pancreas to secretin, a hormone that stimulates the secretion of pancreatic fluid. It aids in the investigation of conditions such as pancreatic insufficiency, gastrinoma, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It’s significant for assessing pancreatic function which is crucial for digestion and metabolism.
Special Instructions
Patients should fast for 10-12 hours prior to specimen collection, and discontinue any medications affecting intestinal motility or insulin levels for 48 hours prior to collection if possible. The test is performed by a non-ARUP laboratory, Inter Science Institute, and separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.
Limitations
The Secretin test has not been cleared or approved by the US FDA, and results obtained from different laboratories or using different methods and kits cannot be used interchangeably. The results cannot be interpreted as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of malignant disease.
