Serotonin, Whole Blood
Also known as: SEROT-WB
Use
Use to diagnose and monitor carcinoid tumors. Preferred serotonin test since most of the blood serotonin resides in the platelets. Metastasizing abdominal carcinoid tumors often show serotonin concentrations greater than 400 ng/mL. It may also show slight increases in conditions such as acute intestinal obstruction, acute MI, cystic fibrosis, dumping syndromes, and nontropical sprue.
Special Instructions
Medications such as lithium, MAO inhibitors, methyldopa, morphine, and reserpine may affect serotonin concentrations. Foods containing serotonin generally do not interfere significantly with the test.
Limitations
This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The test is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes.
