Special Stain, Alcian Blue pH 2.5
Also known as: AB 2.5 SS
Use
This test is a histochemical special stain (Alcian Blue at pH 2.5) designed to identify strongly acidic sulfated mucosubstances in tissue specimens, commonly used to highlight mucopolysaccharides for diagnostic pathology purposes.
Special Instructions
Test is performed as a stain-and-return (technical) service only. Submit electronic request or use ARUP Anatomic Pathology Test Request Form #32960 if electronic ordering is unavailable. Transport specimens in ARUP tissue transport kit #47808 via eSupply or contact client services.
Limitations
Specimens must be representative tissue or cells; depleted or non‑representative tissue is unacceptable. Frozen specimens are unacceptable. Protect paraffin blocks or slides from excessive heat. Slides must be unstained, positively charged, 3–5 microns. Submission limitations include inability to process nonparaffin tissue and requirement for proper fixation and embedding.
