Use
The Bielschowski stain is a special stain used primarily in histological studies to highlight nerve fibers, neurofibrillary tangles, and senile plaques, which are characteristic features in brain tissue of patients with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. The presence of these pathological features can assist in diagnosing various neurological disorders.
Special Instructions
Anatomic Pathology Test Request Form Recommended (ARUP form #32960). Protect paraffin block and/or slides from excessive heat during transport. Submit electronic request or use ARUP Anatomic Pathology Form if electronic ordering is unavailable.
Limitations
This test is performed as a stain and return service only, meaning it does not include interpretation by a pathologist. It is essential for the submitting healthcare professional to have the capability to interpret the results in the clinical context. Specimens submitted with nonrepresentative tissue type and depleted specimens are unacceptable.
