Special Stain, Jones
Also known as: JONES SS
Use
This test is a histochemical special stain (Jones stain) used for demonstration of basement membranes and reticular fibers (e.g., glomerular basement membrane) by impregnating them with metallic silver to appear black. It serves as a technical stain-and-return service in anatomic pathology settings.
Special Instructions
Ordering is recommended via ARUP Anatomic Pathology Test Request Form (ARUP form #32960) or via electronic request. Tissue block or slides must be protected from excessive heat, and sections/slides must be transported in ARUP tissue transport kit (#47808) or via ARUP Connect™ eSupply. This is a stain-and-return technical service only.
Limitations
Specimens must be representative tissue type; depleted specimens are unacceptable. Formalin-fixed, paraffin‑embedded tissue or cellblock is required. Slides must be 3–5 µm thick, positively charged, and at least one slide must be provided. Frozen specimens are unacceptable.
