Special Stain, Thioflavin S
Also known as: THIO S SS
Use
Thioflavin S staining is used as a histochemical stain to visualize amyloid deposits in tissue sections. It is employed in the identification of amyloid plaques, which are associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. This test is an important tool in neuropathology for the confirmation and diagnosis of amyloid-related conditions.
Special Instructions
The test is performed as a stain and return (technical) service only. Submit electronic request via ARUP Connect™. Use ARUP Anatomic Pathology Form (#32960) with an ARUP client number if you do not have electronic ordering capability.
Limitations
The test is limited to providing visualization of amyloid deposits in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue. Specimens submitted with nonrepresentative tissue type or depleted specimens are unacceptable. The interpretation of staining results should be made in conjunction with clinical findings and other pathological data. Frozen specimens are unsuitable for this test.
