Streptococcus (Group A) Culture
Also known as: MC STREP
Use
This test is the gold standard for confirming group A streptococcal infection. It is particularly used when rapid tests yield negative results but clinical suspicion of streptococcal infection remains moderately high. Group A Streptococcus is a significant cause of pharyngitis, commonly referred to as strep throat. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management and treatment, helping to prevent complications such as rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis.
Special Instructions
Specimen source is required for accurate processing. Use Eswab transport media for specimen submission. Collection and storage at room temperature or refrigerated conditions ensures sample stability. The test is authorized under New York state regulations, ensuring compliant execution.
Limitations
Negative culture results do not completely rule out streptococcal infection, especially in patients with low bacterial load. Cultures may be negative if the specimen is not collected properly or if antimicrobials were administered prior to collection. There may be variability in identification due to the presence of other organisms. Susceptibility testing of beta-hemolytic streptococci for penicillin is generally not needed, as these strains are not known to show resistance. Nevertheless, susceptibility to other antibiotics such as erythromycin and clindamycin may be variable.
