Testosterone, Bioavailable and Total, Includes Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (Adult Females, Children, or Individuals on Testosterone-Suppressing Hormone Therapy)
Also known as: BIO T MASS
Use
Provides a calculated value for bioavailable testosterone concentration using total testosterone measured by mass spectrometry. It may be used to evaluate hyperandrogenism in children and cisgender females, monitor testosterone-suppressing hormone therapies (such as antiandrogens or estrogens), evaluate testosterone status in individuals with protein-binding abnormalities, or assess hypogonadism in cisgender males.
Special Instructions
For individuals on testosterone-suppressing hormone therapies, refer to cisgender female reference intervals. Refer to the ARUP Testosterone Tests Comparison table for comparison with other testosterone tests.
Limitations
The test is developed and performed in a CLIA-certified laboratory and has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Concentrations of free and bioavailable testosterone are derived from mathematical expressions based on constants for the binding of testosterone to albumin and/or sex hormone binding globulin.
