Testosterone, Free (Adult Females, Children, or Individuals on Testosterone-Suppressing Hormone Therapy)
Also known as: TESTOS FR
Use
The test provides a calculated value for free testosterone concentration using total testosterone measured by mass spectrometry. It is used to evaluate hyperandrogenism in children and cisgender females, monitor testosterone-suppressing hormone therapies (such as antiandrogens or estrogens), assess testosterone status in individuals with protein-binding abnormalities, and evaluate hypogonadism in cisgender males.
Special Instructions
To compare this test to other testosterone tests, refer to the ARUP Testosterone Tests Comparison table. Collect specimen between 6-10 a.m.
Limitations
The free testosterone concentration is estimated based on total testosterone measured by mass spectrometry and the binding constant of testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). The test's performance characteristics were determined by ARUP Laboratories and it was performed in a CLIA certified laboratory but it has not been cleared or approved by the US FDA. Not applicable for individuals whose conditions do not match the established reference intervals.
