Thyroid Antibodies
Also known as: THYRO
Use
This test evaluates autoimmune thyroid disorders by measuring the levels of thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies and thyroglobulin antibodies in a patient's serum or plasma. It helps in diagnosing thyroid-related autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. Elevated levels of these antibodies can indicate an autoimmune process affecting the thyroid gland, which can lead to thyroid dysfunction.
Special Instructions
This test is not the preferred initial test for evaluation of autoimmune thyroid disorders. Consider ordering Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Antibody (0050075) for initial testing. Specimen collection should be done carefully to avoid hemolysis and lipemia, which can affect test results.
Limitations
The test may not detect all cases of autoimmune thyroid disease or could be influenced by non-thyroid autoimmune conditions. Grossly hemolyzed, lipemic specimens, or EDTA plasma are unacceptable for this test and can lead to erroneous results. Interpretation should consider the clinical context and other diagnostic results.
